World Mental Health Day: Tears, Smiles and Everything in Between

Did you know 17 muscles are activated every time you weep?

We aren’t saying crying is a substitute for leg day but boy, wouldn’t it be a LOT easier if it were?


Jokes aside, would you believe us if we told you that crying boosts the same happy hormones in our bodies that a crackin’ workout at the gym does? It sounded unbelievable to us too.


But if you ever needed another reason to cry #adulting – now you’ve got one!



Stressful work environment - cry of #adulting


As beneficial as crying might be, being a Debbie Downer does no good either. We’re coming at you with another fun fact - smiling from ear to ear also activates up to 43 facial muscles! And while you’re giving those facial muscles a workout, you’re also releasing endorphins – hormones that make you feel good from within!



Speaking of these happiness-inducing hormones, let’s list some for you:

• Serotonin

• Endorphins

• Dopamine

• Oxytocin

• Adrenaline


While the focus is always on boosting our happiness by increasing the production of happy hormones, there is a case to be made for some amount of nervousness and anxiety within the nervous system.


There is no light without darkness, no good without bad – similarly, for the optimum functioning of our body, there is a need for all emotions and hormones to be available in the right measure!



Having a balance of smiles and sorrows


And this is possible only if you’re surrounded by a healthy environment both

around and within yourself. For mental health is not only dealing with issues within one’s

head but also the heart.
