Lively celebrations of Vaisakhi or Baisakhi initially consisted of welcoming the spring harvest season. The word Vaisakhi itself has been derived from the month Vaisakh which falls during this season.
During the pre-British and British era, the celebrations symbolised that the harvested crops were ready for sale which at the time was considered most joyous of times for agriculturally forward India. This day also commemorates the Jallianwala Bagh massacre which marked a historical event in the Indian Freedom Movement.
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs chose this ecstatic day of carnival to formalize the concept of Saint-Soldier thereby bringing the Khalsa community into existence.
While Vaisakhi holds immense importance among Sikhism, it is also observed by Hinduism at large. Usually Vaisakhi is celebrated by visiting Gurudwaras which are beautifully decorated for the occasion.
Prayers are offered, kirtan (hymns) are sung, daan (charity) is performed primarily by distributing hand fans, water pitchers and seasonal fruits. However, acts of daan are not strictly limited to these. Langar makes for the list too, where people are served food in the gurdwara, irrespective of their religion.
What’s more?
Nagar Kirtan (processions) are carried out by people where holy hymns and scriptures from the Guru Granth Sahib are sung and recited. At some places, the deities and the holy book of Sikhs are proudly carried around along with the Nishan Sahib (Sikh Flag).
We wish a very Happy Vaisakhi to those who celebrate!
