Extremely well known for its enigmatic and flavourful delicacies served on a banana leaf is Onasadya- an enriching feast comprising various dishes native to the state of Kerala and the Malayali culture of South India.
Onam is rejoicefully celebrated by preparation of the special food, offering prayers to Lord Vishnu and conducting various activities of boat races, dance forms, rangoli, food, and traditional clothing.

The celebration covers the story of Mahabali (a demon king who ruled over the three worlds) and Lord Vishnu.
As the folktale goes, Mahabali defeated every god and came to rule the three worlds of heaven, earth and hell. Gods then seeked help from Lord Vishnu so as to stop him. Lord Vishnu however did not participate in any battles as Mahabali dedicatedly devoted him. He had other plans of tackling him.
After his victory over the gods, he declared he would grant any wish whilst he performed a ritual. Lord Vishnu then transformed into a dwarf called Vamana who wished for three paces of land of the same size as him.
Just when Mahabali was to grant his wish, Vamana increased in such a size which covered all the three worlds. Mahabali granted him the wish and the demons were banished back to hell. This restored calm from the chaos.
Seeing the love Mahabali had for his subjects and his devotion, Lord Vishnu granted him a visit back to his subjects once every year. This peaceful visit by Mahabali is what we celebrate as Onam today.
