Navroz, also known as the Parsi New Year, is benevolently celebrated in India by the Parsi and Zoroastrian communities. However, it goes without saying that their acquaintances and friends also indulge themselves in the festivities as their own.
These festivities are incomplete without offering prayers to Zarathustra (Ahura Mazda), the only God of this monotheistic religion which originated nearly 3500 years ago in Persia which is present day Iran. It is a common myth to associate the Parsi deity with only and only fire because their temples are called fire temples or Agiary. In reality, they pray to Zarathustra and fire of all of the four elements of earth is given more importance.
Other cultural festivities which bring people together are preparing the sharing of mouth-watering meals that are home to the Parsi cuisine, seeking forgiveness for the past year’s transgressions, mental purification and embarking on the new year with love and harmony.
The rich Iranian heritage is clearly reflected in the delicacies of Prawn Patio, Mori Dar, Patra Ni Macchi, Haleem, Akoori, Sali Boti, Saffron Pulao and Falooda to name a few.
Did you know?
Navroz is celebrated twice a year, during March and August. This difference is because the Indian Parsi community follows the Shahenshahi calendar thereby shifting the celebration by nearly 200 days from its origin date.
OurDesk wishes you a very Happy Navroz!
