Cheti Chand is the lunar night joyfully observed in the month of Chet in the Sindhi and Hindu calendar. It is also known as the Sindhi New Year.
The deep-rooted story behind the grand celebrations of Cheti Chand go way beyond.
Citizens belonging to the Sindhi community were once ruled by Mirk Shah, a Muslim Tyrant. The community offered prayers to the Indus river known as Varuna Devta resulting in the birth of Uderolal- an answered prayer.
Uderolal, later came to be known as Jhulelal, transformed into a warrior and an old man who saved the Sindhi community belonging to the regions of present day India and Pakistan.
His preaching echoed as the voice of the community. He rightfully vocalised the injustice forced by Mirk Shah in the form of religious conversions.
Jhulelal’s birth will therefore remain an auspicious occasion to look upto because he came through like a knight in shining armour for Sindh and its people.
Today, people celebrate Cheti Chand by offering prayers to Jhulelal and organizing fairs, processions, feasts and so on.
