We’re sure you might’ve heard various valorant tales of Maa Durga slaying the demon Mahishasura, if not. Here’s a quick summary.
In this mythological story of good triumphing over evil, Mahishasura is known to be a half-buffalo-structured demon who meditated for long years in order to receive a blessing (Vardan) from Lord Brahma. When Lord Brahma still did not grant him a vardan of being immortal, he asked for a vardan as such where no male god, demon, or human could ever succeed at killing him. After being granted the same, Mahishasura wreaked havoc with his army of demons in hell and proceeded to do the same on earth.
Unable to beat him, all the lords (devas) of heaven sought Lord Brahma to reverse the given Vardan, except it was not possible. Seeing this Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva created Goddess Durga to restore peace on earth. This battle between Maa Durga and Mahishasura lasted for nine long days wherein Mahishasura changed various physical forms to emerge as victor. Alas! His vardan backfired on him as a curse and he was slayed to defeat by Maa Durga. His arrogance of believing no woman could kill him turned out to dig his own grave.
Navratri: A Courageous Tale Of Good Over Evil
Mahishasura was killed to death in the same form that he was born in: Buffalo. Irony, since he possessed the ability to shape his physical form into anything, person or form. During the battle with Maa Durga, he switched forms from buffalo to lion, elephant, and handsome man. Not only this, before he stepped into the battleground he sent his demon goons called Chanda, Munda, and Raktbeej to defeat Maa Durga. However, the invincible Goddess saved all of humanity, heaven, and hell while riding on a Lion. And that is why Navratri is celebrated, to religiously worship the Goddess for saving all the three worlds of Heaven, hell, and humans.
