Gudi Padwa is a significant celebration in the Hindu calendar.
This day marks the beginning of the spring season and is associated with celebrations to commemorate the creation of time and universe by Lord Brahma.
Commonly known as the Maharashtrian New Year, Gudi Padwa is primarily celebrated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Goa and Daman.
People from different states celebrate this day differently. Usually Maharashtrian households are seen hoisting a special gudi dvaja (flag). This flag is made of a saree or dhoti or other piece of cloth garlanded with flowers, mango, and neem leaves; a sugar crystal garland called gathi, topped with upturned silver or copper vessels.
The celebration mostly includes gatherings of family, friends and loved ones, preparation of festive foods, folk music and dances.
On Gudi Padwa, people usually look to the future in anticipation as the day symbolises new beginnings.
