Illegal shipments of e-waste from the global north to the global south is a worrying issue. Locally too, it has been found that India is the world’s third largest producer of e-waste. It has also been noted that 90% of India’s e-waste is informally recycled in North-East Delhi which makes it the national e-waste recycling hub.
Unsafe working conditions:
Recycling hazardous e-waste has become a livelihood for innumerable microentrepreneurs in the country. In the process of recycling, these workers separate precious, recoverable metals and return them to the economy in exchange of money.
An enormous quantity of all such e-waste is processed outside of government oversight and legislation in the informal sector. Additionally, these dismantlers don’t always work in an environment that’s safe enough to be unaffected by the radiations of harmful chemicals and metals. Through such work, they risk their lives to support their families.
