It’s a known fact that coworking spaces are one of a kind regardless of working as a freelancer, start-up, or solopreneur, needing a place to study or run a dynamic business model of your own. Every business model requires a unique environment and arrangement that suits them well in order to conduct their day-to-day activities. Coworking places are the umbrellas that save innumerable business models from the rapid and dynamic rains of changes by providing them shelter to set up their workstations.
Since different people opt to work from a coworking space, there are slight chances of mishaps taking place. For instance, people from two different companies might require a particular meeting room at the same time or a coworker accidentally takes a dedicated desk of a fellow coworker. There might also be situations where the pantry is full during lunch hours resulting in some people having to wait till it’s less crowded and so on. The only way to tackle these mishaps is by following certain coworking etiquettes so that every person benefits equally from their coworking space rather than a business model/coworker using up all the benefits on their own.
Here are some home rules of OurDesk that our members diligently follow in order to utilise our facilities in such a manner that there’s ample left for every other coworker too. As they say, sharing is caring.
Be mindful of non-disruptive behaviour
A coworking space may sometimes be a little loud since many coworkers attend to their work calls all day long. However, not every person can work efficiently with noise being around. So to respect the presence of other coworkers and their ongoing work, it is suitable to observe non-disruptive behaviour while in a coworking space. A call for you may be a distraction for someone else. Hence we must be mindful to remain as soft and noiseless as possible so as to carry on our work and not interrupt others while they work on their own.
Clean up after yourself
Cleanliness is next to Godliness as the wise saying goes, one must always keep his surroundings clean. Be it work-related or not. This is especially important in a coworking space because every facility is used by every coworker at some point or the other. You wouldn't want to enter a meeting room or work at a desk filled with crumbs of food or littered by paper or plastic, this is the very reason we at OurDesk encourage every coworker to clean up after themselves because if everyone does the needful, it’s a great way to go. Having a neat and tidy workstation also proves to increase the thinking capacity of a person.
Communication is key
Since a coworking space is a place where every room/desk/facility et cetera is used by every coworker, there are chances of two people needing the same meeting room/printer/desk and other amenities at the same time. To ensure that every coworker gets to utilise the facilities, it is essential for them to communicate. By this we mean, coworkers need to book meeting rooms in advance for the said no. of hours and even cancel timely if they don't require it anymore so that others can reschedule their meetings that utilise the same meeting room. This ensures a chaos-free work environment.
Prohibition of food consumption at workstations
Adding more to the point mentioned above, a clean workstation not only means just having to clean up after yourself. Although it is absolutely crucial. We at OurDesk prohibit munching chips, nibbling on mid-day snacks etc since eating at workstations is extremely unhygienic. Plus nobody wants to see oily finger stains on their devices or the area around it. You clean up after yourself, sure but there are chances of food being dropped on the floor and not being cleaned properly. This leads to flies, mosquitoes, rats and other insects forming their way into your desk. To avoid scenarios like such, we believe it is best to practise this habit by eating only in the pantry room.
Prohibition of consumption of Tobacco & Alcohol
To avoid unwanted behaviour of coworkers that might be troublesome to the community, we believe in a zero intoxication policy. It may also tend to affect your work and related tasks. Additionally, there is a place of worship downstairs at OurDesk, a ‘Darbar’ where we people pray. To respect the presence of the Darbar and those who offer their prayers, we prohibit our members from doing so.
